The time it takes to walk a mile will depend on a few important factors.
The most important thing that matters when you consider how long it takes to walk a mile is the speed you are going. The faster you walk, the faster you will walk a mile.
How long does it take to walk a mile?
If you walk at an average speed, it will take you around 18-22 minutes to walk a mile. If you are able to walk a mile in about 15 minutes or so, you’re probably walking at a little faster speed, or you’re really in shape and are able to walk at faster speeds very comfortably. Or perhaps you’re just a naturally faster walker!
What is the average walking speed?
An average person will walk at a rate of 2 to 4 miles per hour. How fast you actually walk will determine how brisk you move, or the pace you move at, as well as how long you strides are. And to some extend, how long your legs are.
For example, if you have short legs and take short strides, and you walk at a regular pace, you will be walking slower than a person who walks at a regular place with long legs, taking regular strides.
Where are some great places to go for walks?
Outside is the best place to go for a walk. I like walking around my neighbourhood or going to the river valley for walks in the evenings when it’s cooler outside. I pop in my music and simply enjoy being outdoors.
Another great idea is to buy a treadmill if you don’t like walking outside for whatever reason. You can buy treadmills for a few hundred dollars now. They will be the basic ones but they totally work. However, if you want to take walking seriously, whether you want to lose weight or just stay active for health purposes, then invest in a good treadmill. Place that bad boy in front of the TV and walk for 30-60 minutes a day while watching TV. You’ll burn a few extra hundred calories a day just by doing this!
How much should you walk to lose weight?
If your goal is to lose weight, you should walk everywhere you go. There isn’t really a set time or distance that guarantees weight loss. But walking burns calories and the more you walk, the more calories you burn.
I like to think that walking 5KM a day is a great way to burn a few hundred calories. It adds up and you could lose 1 pound per week by doing this, assuming you eat properly.

Walking calculator to measure how many calories you burn walking

You’ll enter your weight, height, age, and activity. For the activity, put in “walking”. And then you can also put in how long you walk for, for example, 5 miles, or yo can put in how long you walk for, for example, 1 hour.
The calculator will determine how many calories you burn based on your physical characteristics like your weight and height, and it will also take your age into consideration.
For example, I put in my stats and if I walked 5 miles in 1 hour, I will have burned 645 calories. Now, walking 5 miles in an hour would require me to walk at a vey very very brisk pace. Probably a pace that is close to jogging without actually jogging.

How to track how long you have walked for
There are a few really cool gadgets you can buy that will track how long you walk for, and at what pace you are going at.
I really really like phone apps for this. If you have a higher end smart phone like an iPhone or premium Android phone, they have built in technology that can track how many steps you take in your phone. Coupled with personal info you input into the app, it will determine how many calories you burned walking and how far you have walked too.
A lot of these apps are free to download. Just hit up your app store and search for them. All you need to do is keep your phone with you as you walk and the phone will do the measuring for you.
If you don’t like using apps, a pedometer is a traditional device that has been around for a long time. It primarily measure how many steps you’ve taken. But a lot of pedometers these days have upped their technology and will also track how far you’ve walked and / or how many calories you’ve burned.

If your goal is to get fit, walking a mile a day won’t be enough. Walking is amazing, don’t get me wrong, but it’s basic movement that your body should be getting anyways.
You’ll want to incorporate strength training and possibly aerobic exercise if you want to shape up your body, look great, and feel great too.
