So you’ve heard about these people making money online with their blogs and you’re wondering how much do these bloggers make?
Actually, you’re probably really wondering if you could make money blogging too…. right?
Well, here’s the real answer.
Most bloggers make diddly squat.
Well, mostly because making money blogging is a lot of work.
I wouldn’t say the work itself is that difficult. I mean, I’d say working a regular day job at the office is probably harder than work as a full time blogger.
But there is a fairly steep learning curve every beginner needs to go through. And most bloggers don’t make any money, or just a little bit only, in their first year.
And that’s the truth.
So how much do successful bloggers make?
I’d say a successful blogger makes enough money to replace their day job income. Or if you’re making $40k – $50k per year, I’d that’s a fairly successful blogger.
Actually, that’s really good when you compare it to most bloggers who don’t make any money.
Really successful bloggers make $100,000+ per year.
That sounds like a crazy amount of money from a blog, but it’s totally doable.
It just takes time. At least a few years to get there. For most bloggers at least.
Blogger income reports
Some bloggers publish income reports.
These are blog posts that show how much money they made last month and what expenses they had as well. Some bloggers do this to show you that “you can do it too” or whatever, but honestly a lot of bloggers do income reports to encourage you to get you started blogging too.
And I think that’s totally fine. They’re making money doing this “blogging” thing that is so foreign to everyone and they want to show you that it’s actually possible to legitimately make money online.
There are a lot of resource pages online that lists a bunch of bloggers and how they make money. It’s like a list of the same people again and again. And a lot of these lists have all the big name bloggers who do income reports.
Let’s be real.
Most bloggers won’t be making $5000+ a month.
But, you certainly can.
Blogging is competitive
The biggest reason why bloggers don’t typically make any money is because it’s a competitive environment. It takes a lot of learning and then work to compete.
But really, it’s just time spent learning and then taking action.
And like I said, if you’re new, it’s gonna take some time because there is a steep learning curve.
Again though, it’s not that the work itself is incredibly difficult or undoable. It’s more that there’s a lot of work and a lot to learn.
And you also do need to be smart and strategic about how you blog and approach building your blog. These are skills you can develop as you blog along so don’t worry if you don’t have them yet.
If you started a blog now, how much money could you make?
I wouldn’t expect to make any money within the first 6 months.
You could make SOME money in your first 6 months, but typically it won’t be much. Something like less than a hundred dollars a month. But it’s a great motivator. Something to get your pallet wet.
If you’re able to make $40,000 in your first year blogging, I’d say you really smashed it out of the park.
A lot of the work you do in the first year will be laying the groundwork so your blog can flourish down the road.
Really, it’s all about getting a lot of traffic to your blog.
And that’s just not something you can easily do with a new blog.
How do bloggers make money?
Making money blogging is fairly straight forward.
It pretty much goes like this….
Visitors will come to your blog. And then the visitor will do something that makes you money. Sometimes you don’t make money right away, rather you make money later like when you get a visitor subscribed to your email list and promote something to them later.
In any case, a few common ways bloggers make money are through advertisements, affiliate marketing, selling their own products, and sponsorships.
I wrote a separate blog posts that details in depth how bloggers make money here.
Most bloggers focus on just a few ways to make money.
You don’t need 10 ways to make money with your blog.
Though most bloggers will diversify their income streams.
Better not to have them all in one basket right.
What’s blogging like?
I guess you can separate blogging into two types of work.
Creating content and then promoting content.
So the creating content is all the activities that goes into publishing a great blog post. And then promoting it means getting this amazing content in front of as many people as possible.
And then you do this really really well, you create opportunities to make money for yourself.
So if you wrote a blog post about low carb snacks, you could promote low carb snack, recipe books, cooking supplies, and even fitness products to stay in shape or lose weight.
A lot of people create these types of content.
But make no money.
Sometimes it’s because they don’t create content, and sometimes it’s because they don’t promote it well.
But most of the time, bloggers who don’t make money suck at both.
It’s a tough reality, but you need to be GREAT at both if you want to succeed as a blogger.
That’s how you’ll make money blogging these days.
And that’s what you’d be doing day in and day out as a blogger.
So you want to start blogging. What should you expect in your first year?
There’s no reason why you can’t be successful in your first year blogging.
Some bloggers smash it and and start making a few hundred dollars per month within just a few months.
But it’s not the norm.
It’s because blogging takes time. It takes time to create great content and then even more time to promote it.
It takes time for your blog to rise up the search engines so people can find you through Google when they look for stuff.
A blog grows up exponentially in a way.
Your traffic is slow to rise, but at about the 1 year to 1.5 year mark, it can really take off when you work hard on building your social media accounts and working SEO.
It’s not like that for everyone, but that’s pretty typical when you get it down.
So how much money could you make if that’s the case?
It depends on your niche and what you are blogging about.
If you blog about things that people spend money around, then that will give you more opportunities to make money.
That’s because there are more things to promote in these niches, and people are readily spending money in them too.
For example, anything under the health, money, or relationship markets are excellent examples of popular niches that make money.
When should you be making good money blogging?
I’d say anywhere between 1-3 years of serious blogging.
It really depends on how many hours you spend a week blogging and how serious you are about it.
It’s kinda like saying how much weight can you lose in a month. That depends on so many things of course.
I’d say if you spend roughly 20 hours a week blogging, you should be making a full time income in 3 years max. And it’s totally reachable between 1-2 years.
I say you “should”…. but it’s not guaranteed.
No business is.
And yea, your blog is a business.
Treat it that way and you should have success.
