Did you know that there are a lot of people who have adopted a high fat diet and are losing a ton of weight?
But how could this be? How can someone eat a high fat diet and lose weight at the same time? I mean, eating fat makes you fat right.
Well, obviously, that’s completely false, or else all these high fat diets that are helping people lose a ton of weight would not work at all.
I want to talk about how a person can lose weight by eating a ton of fat. And why you should start thinking about doing it too if you have weight to lose.

Eating Fat Makes You Fat
Fat is a macronutrient, just like a carbohydrate and protein is.
Fats, carbs, and proteins give your body energy to function. Eating a large proportion of ONE of these macronutrient themselves won’t make you gain weight if you don’t over eat. And that’s the big key here, NOT over eating.
You pretty much eat any food you want, but as long as you keep total calories at or below your maintenance level, you likely will NOT gain weight. If you do, it probably won’t be much. That means you could eat a lot of ice cream and not gain weight (again, as long as you don’t eat over your maintenance calories).
Is that healthy? No. But in terms of making you fat, it likely won’t.
So that right there tells you that eating a lot of fat doesn’t necessarily mean you will get fat.
However, that’s not really the question, is it.
The main thing you want to know is what types of food you should be eating if you want to LOSE weight. Chances are, you are heavier than you’d like and you want to shed weight fast.
Well, a high fat diet is your answer. I’ll explain more below.
Why Eating Fat Is Important For Weight Loss
Remember that all food is made up of protein, carbs, and fats (these are the 3 macronutrients).
Your body treats each macronutrient differently.
You CAN eat a lot of carbs and lose weight. It’s much harder though. It’s really hard to sustain a high carb diet (in my opinion) when you get hungry so quickly because carbs are burned up fast for energy and your body will urge you to feed again.
But besides the hunger issue and constantly rise and fall in energy levels from eating carbs all day, every time you eat carbs you are raising insulin levels and replenishing glycogen.
Why do these two things matter?
This is the most important hormone you need to pay attention to when losing weight. In a nutshell, if you have elevated insulin levels, your body will NOT be burning fat. In fact, your body is in a state of storing energy.
After you have a carbohydrate rich meal, insulin levels are raised sky high for a minimum of a few hours. During this time, you are storing energy and NOT burning fat. This happens with carbs because carbohydrates spike insulin levels the most (compared to proteins and fats).
This is why LOW CARB diets are so successful at helping people lose body fat. Adopting a high carb diet for weight loss is really the opposite thing you should do. SOME people are able to eat high carb and lose weight. I’m not bashing high carb diets. But it’s much harder to lose weight eating insulin spiking carb rich foods compared to foods that spike insulin levels minimally.
Remember, elevated insulin levels (from eating foods like carbs) means no fat burning.
Glycogen is temporary stored energy (happens in your liver). When you eat (carbs), your bloodstream will be flooded with glucose. Your body needs to store all this extra energy somewhere, and it does that by storing glucose in your liver (it’s called glycogen when it’s stored).
This a very normal and good metabolic process. But when your goal is to LOSE FAT, you don’t want to do this. You want as little glycogen as possible.
Because glycogen is the FIRST place your body will go to for energy. It is temporary energy for your body when it needs it quickly. You have ANOTHER form of energy on your body, FAT!
And guess what? Your body will NEVER use the actual fat on it for energy if you are constantly replenishing glycogen (again, your body uses glycogen for energy first).
In other words, when you are constantly eating carbs, you are constantly replenishing glycogen stores, which means your body won’t use fat tissue for energy and you won’t lose weight.
This is yet another reason why high carb diets are not ideal for weight loss.
How To Actually Lose Body Fat
So what should you eat to lose weight?
Well, I think it’s clear you need to keep carbohydrates low if you want to lose weight optimally.
So that just leaves proteins and fats left.
You always want to eat just enough protein to maintain your body.
The real macronutrient to help you lose weight is fats though.
The big deal is this:
You can’t just eat low carb low fat and moderate protein. You’d be in a massive caloric deficit and you’re going to feel awful eating this way.
So you NEED to eat MORE of something else besides carbs.
And that’s FAT.
Because fat raises your insulin levels minimally. It’s so little that it’s basically negligible. It’s why you can eat a ton of fat and not get fat. Remember, elevated insulin levels means you’re NOT burning fat.
By eating a lot of fat, you are giving your body a lot of nutrients that does not spike insulin, and therefore will keep your body in a state of fat burning for as much of the day as possible.
That’s why eating fat makes you thin.
That’s why eating fat makes you lose fat.
And that’s the whole idea behind a ketogenic diet for weight loss.
A keto diet is very low in carbs, moderate in protein, and high in fats. This combination of macronutrients will put your body in a state of fat burning as much as possible.
Is keto healthy?
There are healthy foods and unhealthy foods. On a keto diet, if you focus on eating healthy keto foods (most of them are healthy anyways), you’ll not only lose a lot of body fat, you’ll get healthier too.
Keto is life changing stuff. It’s really catching on. Because it works so damn well.
The really important thing is to do keto right. The goal is to get into what’s called ketosis so your body will be at an optimal fat burning mode.
To do that, you need to be eating the right foods in the right proportions.
