This list is a compilation of the best places North America has to offer for holidaying, road trips, and sight seeing!
With North American being such a massive continent, it’s hard to nail down a list like this, but I’ve attempted to give you ideas of places you can go in North America!
(this is an on-going list and I’ll be adding more cities & destinations).
In no particular order…
Portland is one of the most hippest city in the US. It’s got a very laid back and chill vibe compared to it’s Big brother Seattle. Portland is very popular for it’s food truck scene (and food in general), along with it’s beer scene and strip clubs. It’s a city you definitely want to experience. Portlands coast has a ton of scenery, including Canon beach. Budget at least one week for Portland and surrounding area alone. And check out this list of things to do in Portland.
Alberta’s small town Banff is one of the most visited places in Alberta. Many of those beautiful mountain landscapes you see come out of Canada are located in Banff and its surrounding vicinity. In Banff, hiking trails, skiing, and other outdoor activities are very popular. The town itself is small and very charming. Banff also has a reputation of being the “Las Vegas of Canada” as well.
The capital city of Alberta isn’t likely a place that comes to mind as somewhere you’d want to visit with so many incredible choices in Canada, but that’s mostly because people don’t talk about Edmonton enough! Edmonton has got one of the best festival scenes in the summer months with something going on virtually every week. Along with a buzzing hockey team and the largest river valley in the entire world, there’s plenty to do to keep you busy for at least a few days.
Seattle is the most popular city in the Pacific North West and is an incredibly popular destination in the US. Some of the most popular things to do in Seattle including visiting Pike Place market where the first Starbucks in the world is located, going up the iconic Space Needle, visiting Alki beach, and watching a Seattle Sounders soccer game. Seattle is a fairly spread out city so you’ll need a vehicle or Uber to get around. For a list of things to do in Seattle, click here.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas right? Well that’s exactly the appeal that the Las Vegas strip draws. It’s a place to go to get away from everything at home and to be completely yourself, or someone else! Vegas has got something for everyone no matter what type of person you are. You can eat your heart out, gamble, watch incredible shows, shop till you drop, and party all night. It’s truly one of the most amazing places to enjoy a weekend get away from your daily routine.
San Francisco is one of my favorite cities I’ve ever been to period! I love how most of what you want to see is all walking distance from each other. San Fran has one of the biggest China towns in the world, excellent sea side piers to stroll along, incredible food at all corners, the Golden Gate bridge to walk or bike across, and incredibly hilly roads to go up and down. San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the States so budget for that but don’t skip on it. Check out things to do in San Francisco here.
New York City
New York City has something for everyone no matter who you are. The Big Apple is truly the epitome of urbanization. If you’re into city life, big buildings, lots of people, and doing a crazy amount of touristy (and not so touristy) things, NYC is your city. It’s an expensive city so budget for that. There are plenty of museums, theaters, lookout points and sky scrapers, and the best park in the world, Central Park to explore.
Florida’s most popular city has a ton to do and has great weather year round. Some of the most popular things to do include visiting Miami beach, exploring the Art Deco District along the beach, attending Miami Ultra Music Festival, and lots of shopping and food! Miami is a mix of poor and rich, with a lot of wealthy neighbourhoods and high rise buildings along the beach to explore. Miami also has a great night life scene too.
Alaska may not be the first place you think of visiting when you think about places to see in the States, and it’s not just for seniors too! One of the most landscapesque and beautiful scenery locations you’ll find in North America, Alaska is a dream place to visit all year round. One of the most popular ways to explore Alaska is by cruise ship where they will take you to some of the most popular Alaskan destinations. You’ll likely see a fair amount of wild life like Eagles, Polar bears, and seals if you keep your eyes peeled.
Yellowstone National Park
Perhaps the most popular park in the US is Yellowstone National Park. It is almost 3500 square miles in size and is located in the North West region of the US. You’ll find incredible Canyons, forest space, hot springs, alpine rivers to explore, geysers, and more. There is a ton of wild life in this area to get a glimpse of. Yellowstone is a place you’d want to spend a few days in, either staying at a nearby hotel or camping.
Located in Arizona, Grand Canyon is one of the most popular day trips from Vegas. A popular way to explore this area is through a helicopter ride. By land, there are many lookout points for incredible Instagram shots. A full day here is likely what you’ll need to get the most of it. Roughly five million people see Grand Canyon every year. If you love landscapes and love taking landscape photos, Grand Canyon is a must see destination.
New Orleans is one of the coolest cities in the United States. It has it’s own complete vibe and has a life of its own. It’s really a place you’d want to go to relax, eat, and celebrate life with it’s incredible array of festivals, music scene, and food! You’ll probably find yourself strolling the incredibly popular French Quarter several time during your visit. To me, New Orleans is all about incredible food and good vibes. If that’s what you want, you won’t be disappointed!
Canada’s most popular French city, Montreal is a multi cultural mecca and one of the best cities to visit in Canada. Montreal has an incredible festival scene in the warmer months that you won’t want to miss. Montreal is also famous for their poutine, a dish made from french fries, cheeze curds, and gravy on top! Food is a big part of Montreal and their tourism industry thrives in Canada because Montreal is one of the most historic cities in Canada. You won’t want to miss the lookout at Mount Royal, the old port in Montreal, and their historic center.
Toronto is Canada’s largest city and often looked at as the capital of Canada (but it isn’t!). Toronto is a big city that truly has the urban feel. Many people across Canada visit Toronto as it’s a major hub for entertainment and tourism. But no matter where you’re from, if you enjoy city vibes, Toronto has something for you. A few very popular things to do in Toronto include watching a Maple Leafs hockey game, riding a hop on hop off tour, taking a day cruise to Niagara Falls, visiting their incredible China town, and going up the CN Tower.
